THE MEXICO CONFERENCE

presented by students at harvard

MEXICAN SOFT POWER

Mexican Soft Power will study the success that Mexico has enjoyed in the projection of its soft power through its culture, traditions, graphic arts, music, food, drinks, and cinema. We hope to draw lessons from this success and understand what is transferrable to other areas where Mexico has yet to succeed.

RULE OF LAW IN MEXICO: A PENDING AGENDA?

Amidst the most violent decades in México’s history, the country is dealing with a real impunity problem. During the last decade, Mexican Authorities have responded by approving a series of constitutional reforms that transform the Justice System. Results, however, have been ambiguous: criminal justice remains hazardous - or selective -, and the judiciary is still not a reliable safeguard to infringements of Human Rights. Some people demand that politicians be jailed, others focus on building reliable public services – México must discuss how to build its Rule of Law.

LAUNCHING MEXICO INTO THE XXI CENTURY: A NEW ECONOMIC MODEL

Launching Mexico into the XXI Century will assess the sustainability of Mexico’s current economic model in light of the current global transformations and increasing inequality. The discussion will then gear towards identifying changes that the country needs to implement in order to take advantage of the changes in productive models and social structures to become one of the XXI century’s success stories.

SECURITY IN MEXICO: CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Mexico's path to sustainable development must include the security of its citizens. This panel will discuss Mexico's most pressing security challenges and address issues such as the involvement of the Mexican Military in supporting public security as well as the importance of the cooperation between Mexico and the US. Finally, "Security in Mexico: Challenges & Solutions" will provide recommendations on how to overcome Mexico’s security challenges.

IS DEMOCRACY WORKING? REFORMULATING THE MODEL

How did Mexico’s current democratic system come to be? How is it performing today considering the transformation that the country has undergone since democracy’s advent? The panel will build on the answer to these questions to analyze the challenges that Mexico’s democracy is facing and propose solutions to increase the levels of trust and satisfaction while reducing gridlock and promoting better governance. Sin embargo, aunque se han invertido millones en promover estos esfuerzos, el resultado es, por lo menos, debatible.

IMPROVING PEOPLE’S HEALTH IN MEXICO

This panel will discuss successes Mexico has had in improving the health of Mexicans, including reforms to improve access to health services such as the Seguro Popular. Panelists will also discuss what the priorities are for Mexico to improve people’s health in the coming decades, and highlight promising interventions or reforms to address health challenges, for instance, the diabetes epidemic, the poor quality of health services, and increasing health care costs, among others.

RENEGOTIATING NAFTA

What is at stake during NAFTA’s renegotiation process? What is Mexico's strategy? Renegotiating NAFTA will offer an assessment of the negotiation process of a trade agreement that has made North America one of the world’s regional powerhouses and discuss opportunities to build on NAFTA to bring the region closer together. Finally, "Renegotiating NAFTA" will explire Mexico's strategy to grow its commercial ties with other partners beyond NAFTA.

STARTING UP MEXICO

What is driving the boom in entrepreneurship in Mexico? What challenges remain for entrepreneurs? What new opportunities will spring up for Mexican entrepreneurs with the arising of new technologies and industries? Starting up Mexico will build on the answers to these questions to think about the role that entrepreneurship will play in turning Mexico into one of the leading innovation hotspots of the XXI Century.
